3 of the World’s Most Unique, Remote Hotels You Should Stay In
I love the electricity of being in the middle of a city. It’s what drove me to move from my home in Hawaii for Los Angeles almost 8 years ago, and it’s the reason I can’t get enough of places like New York, Seattle, and Reykjavik. But in the past few years, I’ve fallen deeply in love with the outdoors, and I honestly have camping to thank for that. When work is hectic and I need to get away, someplace far off and removed from the rest of the world is the perfect way to recharge and spark new energy. But, because I know camping isn’t for everyone, finding the perfect hotel in the perfect remote destination to plan a getaway around might be the way to go. Here are 3 unique hotels I’ve stayed in, in 3 amazing remote locations, that are destinations in themselves. I cannot recommend these hotels enough, not to mention the places they are in, especially if you are looking for a true getaway ‘off the grid’ while still enjoying the comforts of a cozy bed.

3 UNIQUE + REMOTE HOTELS YOU SHOULD STAY IN
1. THE BUUBBLE HOTEL
LOCATION: REYKHOLT, ICELAND
Why It’s Great: Iceland is a booming destination right now, and after going there myself, I can say without a doubt that it’s worth all of the hype and more! The country is full of amazing geography that can’t be found anywhere else in the world, and, some of the most famous sites to see can be found on a driving loop called the Golden Circle. The loop is near Reykjavik, and in a short distance you can explore geysers, waterfalls, craters, and more. Not far from the main ‘Loop’ (but far enough to feel like you’ve found a spot that’s entirely your own) is the Buubble Hotel, a series of transparent orbs hidden away in the trees. There’s no formal reception, but someone from the hotel will come out to meet you and show you the property at check-in. The bubbles themselves are simple, with a huge bed, heating, and cozy blankets to snuggle up in. The focus here is on the sky and the surroundings, which can be seen clearly thanks to each bubble’s fully transparent enclosure. On a clear night, you might even get to see the Northern Lights from the comfort of your bed.

2. COWSHED BOUTIQUE BUNKHOUSE
LOCATION: UIG, ISLE OF SKYE, SCOTLAND
Why It’s Great: The Cowshed is located on the Isle of Skye, about a 6-8 hour drive from Glasgow. Skye is an incredible, mythical place that feels completely untouched by 21st century chaos. Here, you’ll find beautiful waterfalls, castles, hills so green you’d think they spilled out of a Crayola box, and some of the wildest cliffs imaginable. The Cowshed is in the middle of it all, and the location alone – with views of the cliffs and the oceans from up high in a little town called Uig – is enough to make this place worthwhile. But it gets better. Book one of their luxury pods to get your own personal ‘cowshed’, up high on a hill, all to yourself. Each cowshed comes with its own bathroom and shower, patio, kitchenette, and mini living room. It’s surprising that it all fits in such a tiny pod, but somehow, it just works. And it’s incredible.

3. FREYCINET LODGE
LOCATION: FREYCINET NATIONAL PARK, TASMANIA, AUSTRALIA
Why It’s Great: About 3 hours away from Hobart by car, the Freycinet National Park is Wonderland for nature lovers. Imagine spherical, orange rock formations pushed right up against the deep blue ocean. Wallabies and other wildlife everywhere to be found, too. In the middle of all of this, the only hotel that’s actually located inside the National Park is the Freycinet Lodge. Designed to both fit in with and protect its environment, the Lodge puts the spotlight on Tasmanian infrastructure and little, almost imperceptible touches that go a long way in terms of working to not disrupt the wildlife and natural surroundings that make this place what it is. The Lodge is so immersive, you won’t want for anything while you’re there. Everything from legitimately good food, to hiking provisions (like binoculars and backpacks for exploring the surroundings), to complimentary samples of Tasmanian wine are included in your stay. Perfect for disappearing from the grid in style.
