Arizona Winter: It’s Time to Hit the Slopes!
- by Kelly Miller
Arizona winters sure has it all, we have sunshine and snow! Fortunately, several parts of Arizona have received a ton of snow recently. It’s the perfect combination to head north and hit the slopes. I’ve rounded up all you need to know for a fun winter escape to Flagstaff for an Arizona adventure.
Where to Stay
When visiting Flagstaff, I am all about staying in a central location that allows you to walk to eateries and shops. During our most recent stay, we booked a room at the Residence Inn Flagstaff. This hotel was just the right spot for us. The rooms were spacious and included a living area and kitchen. When staying for a long weekend (or more) it sure is nice to have a kitchen, especially when you are traveling with kids. You can bring along snacks, store your leftovers in the frig and you’re good to go.
Staying at the Residence Inn allowed us to walk to restaurants and stores in the area. It was also nice to walk around and take in that mountain air.
Hit the Slopes
It’s so nice that you don’t have to travel far to ski. If staying downtown Flagstaff, skiing is just 14 miles and it will take you just under 30 minutes to get to your destination. Arizona Snowbowl offers everything you need for a fun and relaxing time on the slopes. The mountain has runs for all levels of skiers and snowboarders. If you are a beginner or it has been a bit since you’ve skied, I highly recommend taking a lesson. I took a half day lesson and it was well worth it.
If you plan on skiing or snowboarding with kids, I also recommend signing them up for lessons. Instructors are matched with participants based on experience. Kids are able to take a morning and/or afternoon session with a break for lunch.
We rented our ski and snowboarding equipment directly through Arizona Snowbowl’s website at the same time that I purchased our ski passes. Purchasing lift tickets in advance is a requirement for the 20-21 season. Also be prepared to show your ski pass receipt on your phone or a printed copy in order to head up the mountain.
To make the most of your time skiing, I HIGHLY encourage you to get to the mountain early! Ok, when I say early, I mean leave your hotel by 7:30 am. This will allow you to get a great parking spot, get your equipment, rent a locker and get skiing without wasting any time.
Mary & Lillian made the most of their first ski trip!
Holiday weekends are going to be busy and expect to pay an increased amount for ski passes and hotel rooms. If your calendar is flexible, plan your ski trip for a non-holiday weekend. Don’t get me wrong, I love a holiday weekend getaway. Presidents’ Day Weekend is right around the corner and if you don’t have plans, this would be a great option!
Food & Drink Recommendations
Flagstaff has a fun foodie scene and definitely has a brewery presence. My favorite spot to grab a casual dinner and a drink would have to be Pizzacletta and Dark Sky Brewery. The two spots share a location, so you can count on amazing pizza paired with your favorite beer. That’s a perfect combination if you ask me!
Make time to stop by Mother Road Brewing Company for lunch or dinner and Biff’s Bagels is perfect for breakfast on the go!
Make the most of your time in the mountain town of Flagstaff! It’s a great spot to getaway and unwind. Take in the scenery and enjoy all that northern Arizona has to offer.
Wild Bum has some great Arizona travel guides. Be sure to check them all out right here!
