How To Get Away Without Going All Out
- by Jesse Clark
Travel plans — canceled. Concerts — canceled. Large gatherings — canceled. The world may not be the most fun at the moment, but that doesn’t mean you have to let widespread closures get in the way of your vacation time. In fact, you can have more fun by sticking close to home, and you don’t even have to spend your entire travel budget to enjoy a staycation. Wild Bum has a few tips that help you make the most of your time at home. Here’s how you can get away without going all out.
Enjoy a night away close to home.
There’s something relaxing about sleeping in a new bed and having someone clean up after you. Even if you can’t get to your destination of choice, you can still get a world away without leaving your hometown.
Shop (on a budget).
Few things are as relaxing as retail therapy for those who like to try new things. When you are feeling burnt out and run down, something as simple as a new pair of jeans or a cozy knit sweater can do a world of good for your emotions. If you’re a new mom, maybe a new go-to nursing t-shirt would make you feel a little better. However, when money is tight, it’s time to get creative. Target and other discount stores can help you satisfy your shopping itch by allowing you to fill your online shopping cart for less.
Ask for a resident discount.
Most museums and other local attractions offer discounted rates for locals. Don’t be afraid to call ahead and ask, and then enjoy the history and culture of your city. You never know what you will discover.
Go hiking.
The cool air, a brisk breeze, and unrivaled scenery all make hiking in the winter a desirable activity. And unless there is an admission fee, most trails are free! Keep in mind, however, that you want to pay close attention to the forecast and make sure to let your friends and family know where you’re going and when you’re coming back. If you’re feeling adventurous and romantic, pack a picnic lunch, bundle up, and enjoy an afternoon in nature.
Splurge on what matters.
When you’re on a limited budget, you have to spend your money wisely. Fortunately, it’s not hard to determine where you get the most bang for your buck. Think about what’s most important to you. Is it relaxation and de-stressing? $75 for a one-hour massage can be a great investment. Prefer to spend your time cuddled up on the couch? Then a luxury blanket and paid streaming service are worth the expense.
Take a virtual cooking class.
When you can’t see the world, bring the world to you. Find a virtual cooking class, and learn to master other culture’s cuisines. You won’t spend any more at the grocery store than you would, anyway — plus, you will open up your mind and your palate to something new.
Turn off the phone.
Last and most important, take a break from the digital world. Turn off the phone, unplug the TV, and spend some face-to-face time with those you love. Play board games, watch the sunrise, or simply enjoy a cup of coffee together. You may find that this is the most effective form of self-care and the quickest and least expensive way to enjoy your vacation at home.
While many of us dream of mountain getaways and days on the beach, our realities are a little less exotic at the moment. That’s okay because you can still practice self-care while taking a break from the mundane. Don’t let travel restrictions get in the way of your good time. You can get away without going all out. In fact, your mental and physical health depends on it!
