Broome With Kids – Free or Low Cost Ideas for the Family

There is something in the air in Broome and we could never put our fingers on it, Broome draws you in, relaxes you and you do not want to leave. We know travelling can be an expensive time for families with accommodation costs, food and travel sometimes there isn’t much left over for experiences. We wanted to share with you some of our favourite kid friendly experiences in Broome that won’t break the bank.

Sunsets at Cable Beach

You can not go past a sunset on Cable Beach, this is what Broome is famous for and it does not disappoint! Pack a picnic, a rug and set up on the hills and enjoy the show. If you have a 4wd you can drive onto the sand and park up right on the beach. This is also where the camels do their walks along the beach. The kids will love watching the camels walking past and with the big open space along the sand you will get to enjoy relaxing while the kids are at play.

Collect Some Shells Along Cable Beach

This was a highlight for Ella spending the morning on Cable Beach collecting shells to fill her bucket. When the tide is low head down to the beach and collect some shells there are plenty to choose from.

Go on a Hunt for Dinosaur Footprints at Gatheume Point

Go on an adventure and hunt for dinosaur footprints your kids will love this! Gatheume Point is located at the end of the peninsula and this spot is most famous for its dinosaur footprints that can been seen at low tide. The huge bonus is that it is one of the most stunning spots you will see, it showcases the iconic colours of Broome with the red dirt and the turquoise water perfectly and you will find it hard to take a bad photo. If you don’t manage to view the footprints there is a fake footprint to show you what to look for located at the top of the rocks which all the kids need to know it is the real deal.

Visit Town Beach

Town Beach is a safe beach for the kids to swim in and also has a playground and water park overlooking the beach. The playground and water park is fenced off and a great spot for the kids to cool off in and is free! With a café right next door you can shout yourself a coffee and enjoy the views of Town Beach while the kids have a play.

Visit the Worlds Oldest Outdoor Picture Garden

Sun Pictures in Broome is the worlds oldest outdoor picture garden which was constructed in 1903, it is open for the public to view during the day and is free to have a look. If you feel like splurging a little on an outing for the family, they have movies on in the evening, we did it and it was well worth it at $17.50 per adult and kids 3-15 are $12.50 if you pack your own snacks it becomes a affordable evening out that is an experience you and the kids won’t forget.

Spend the Day at Redell Beach

A quiet beach compared to the more popular Cable Beach but just as beautiful. Enjoy the peaceful location, let the kids play in the sand and climb the many rocks that are spread out on the beach. We saw lots of little crabs crawling along the beach which the kids loved to watch and enjoyed having the beach almost to ourselves.

Coffee at Runway Bar

Have a coffee at Runway Bar and Restaurant, sit outside and wait for the planes to fly straight over your head we were lucky and got a big plane going straight over our heads there are plenty of helicopters and small planes flying around so you are guaranteed to see some and it keeps the kids entertained watching and waiting while you can enjoy a coffee.

Enjoy an Affordable Kid Friendly Dinner Out Overlooking the Beach

Well not exactly a typical sit down at a restaurant kind of dinner, but to us this is our preferred dinner out when travelling with young kids. Our go to low cost dinner option that is kid friendly and we can actually sit down and enjoy our food is getting some local fish and chips and finding a place with beach views. We loved the fish and chips at Bluey’s Fish and Chips shop it has actually been hard to beat.

Pay a Visit to the Broome Library

If you have a kid that loves books like we do, we have to make a trip to the library in each place we visit. With activities on like rhyme time, story time and crafts check out Broome Libraries timetable for a fun free activity with the kids, also helps to get out of the heat for a break. Also if you love books there is a beautiful little bookstore called Kimberley Bookshop which has a stunning collection of books for kids and adults. We picked out some nice presents for family and friends, the owner is lovely and gift wraps your presents.

Courthouse Markets

Trading every Saturday in the Dry season from April to October are Broomes Courthoue Markets, held in the Heritage listed gardens of the Broome Courthouse. With over 115 stalls, live music and an abundance of food to choose from it’s easily a morning out for everyone to enjoy.

Take a Walk Around China Town

We timed this with Bodhi’s nap in the pram and had a wander around what use to be a bustling Mecca for the pearling industry. It’s a small but pretty walk around China Town and after that you can go for a wander through the Pearl shops and learn about the pearling industry of Broome.

For a bit of a splurge

  • Take a camel ride along Cable Beach, yes it is touristy but the kids love it so why not have this iconic experience, this will set you back $50pp.
  • Dinner at the Mangrove Hotel, large outdoor area, plenty of space for the kids to run around in and water views while you eat, you might actually get to sit down and eat your dinner in peace.
  • Although we didn’t do it worth a mention as we have heard from others it was a great experience. Take a hovercraft tour of the Dinosaur Footprints which will take you around and you will get to see the real dinosaur footprints, unique experience for the family but is on the more expensive side of things.

We absolutely loved our time in Broome it really captures you and it is a place we will be back to, we can not wait to explore some more!
