9 Authentic Foods You Must Try in Mexico

As we continue with Mexico as our place of the month for October, we knew we had to talk about the delicious, authentic foods that you will find there. Trust us, there’s no shortage of flavorful cuisine options when it comes to visiting this country. While there are endless foods you could try in Mexico, we have handpicked 9 of the best ones for you right here.
I think we can all agree that Mexican food is one of the best types of cuisines to ever exist, from the crunchy tortilla chips to spicy salsas and flavorful meat. We have Mexico to thank for many of our favorite food items. They even introduced things like corn, tomatoes, and chocolate (yep!) to the world.
When making a trip to Mexico, no matter which city you go to, you don’t want to miss out on the authentic food dishes that they have to offer. Below we’ve included some of our favorites that we highly recommend trying while there. Is anyone else’s mouth watering already?

1. Elote
Also known as Mexican street corn. Elote can be eaten on the cob or as a salad, although in Mexico you are more likely to find it on the cob. This classic street food is grilled or boiled corn that has been lathered in mayonnaise or crema and then coated with cheese, spices and seasonings.
2. Tamales
Tamales are made of masa or dough (usually corn based) that is steamed inside of a corn husk or banana leaf. The tamales can be filled with a number of different things such as meat, cheese, vegetables, fruits or chilies.
3. Mole
Mole is arguably one of the most traditional Mexican foods to try on your travels. It is a sauce that is usually made using chillies as a base, and adding flavors like chocolate, nuts, cloves, and tomatoes. It tends to be served over top of chicken or rice. There are many different types of mole, but it’s said that trying the mole negro is a must!
4. Tacos al pastor
Tacos al pastor get their name from the Lebanese immigrants who first brought shawarmas to Mexico. These pork tacos are full of flavor and they are a MUST when you are in Mexico.
5. Flautas/Taquitos
Flautas, also known as taquitos are mini, rolled-up tacos that are filled with meat, cheese, and then deep fried to a crispy perfection!
6. Chilaquiles
If you like nachos, you will love chilaquiles–Mexico’s version of nachos! To start you have fried corn tortillas, then they are topped off with any number of things from pulled chicken and salsa to cheese, onion, and crema.
7. Enchiladas
We all know about the deliciousness of enchiladas, but authentic enchiladas in Mexico are crazy good. Corn tortillas are stuffed with chicken or veggies and topped off with a red or green enchilada sauce. Yum!
8. Pozole
Pozole is Mexican style soup that starts with coarsely ground corn (hominy) that is cooked broth and adding meat like chicken or pork. Then, you top it off with all your favorite condiments. It’s a hearty and satisfying soup.
9. Tortas
Last but not least, tortas. These are Mexican style sandwiches served on an oval shaped bun. They are filled with items like ham, avocado, chicken, lettuce, and tomato. You can also order a torta ahogada which means it will be dipped in salsa or tomato sauce!
